US Military Experimental X-51A Waverider Breaks Up in Test Flight over Pacific Ocean
An unmanned experimental military aircraft dubbed the Waverider broke apart 30 seconds into a test flight over the Pacific Ocean. The craft is designed to go six times the speed of sound and US military scientists are hoping to use it to develop high-speed cruise missiles. The cause of the crash has been put down to a faulty control fin, which was identified halfway through the flight. This fell far short of the ultimate goal to see the aircraft fly for at least 5 minutes. The full cost of the experimental programme that has so far produced 4 models of X-51A crafts has not been released.
