'Sniffer Mice' To Help Israeli Police Find Drugs, Illegal Narcotics: 'Bio Explorers' Research
Israeli Police have found a new ally in the battle against illegal narcotics: mice. Law enforcement officers are seeking to utilize the rodents' powerful sense of smell, which is more acute than that of traditional sniffer dogs. Police are developing a partnership with Bio Explorers, a Herzliya-based company which is developing an airport security scanner that uses mice to detect explosives and drugs. In the airport scanner, scents emitted from passengers are piped to nearby mice, which are trained to run into an alarmed chamber when they detect certain substances. A police source said the mice could be used as a replacement for sniffer dogs, but did not say whether they will be deployed on leashes or given names.
