Saakashvili and Ivanishvili open new Parliament

The new Georgian Parliament building has hosted MPs for the first time since contentious elections ended the domination of President Mikheil Saakashvili's United National Movement party and which saw billionaire Bizdina Ivanishvili's Georgia Dream coalition take over the reins of power. Ivanshvili vowed to work with Saakashvili and opposition forces, saying "we should avert any kind of confrontation. We should do anything in order to cooperate and to serve our people, and there should be no difference because of political affiliations". Ivanishvili, who is 56 and Georgia's richest man with an estimated USD 6.4 billion, entered politics only a year ago when he mounted a challenge to Saakashvili, who has been in power since the Rose revolution in 2003.
