Fatah turnout poor in Palestinian elections

Thousands of people across the Palestinian territory of the West Bank have been voting in the first local elections since 2005. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah party failed to win a resounding endorsement of their majority support despite the absence of their main political rivals, Hamas. The militant organisation boycotted the election, saying that the rift between the two parties must be healed before voting can be considered meaningful. Voter turnout was low, with only fifty-five per cent of registered voters making the effort to cast their ballots; many Palestinians expressed their lack of faith in the ability of the electoral proceedings to make a difference to severe economic problems in the West Bank.
