Egypt reopens Pyramids: tourism hit by Arab Spring and anti-Western YouTube protests

Egypt reopened one of its three iconic Giza pyramids to the public this week following extensive renovation works designed to preserve the ancient structure and improve the viewing experience for visiting tourists. The reopening - which came following three years of reconstruction and restoration work - is certainly well-timed: Egypt has seen a slump in tourism income since the 2011 Arab Spring revolution which rocked the country and led to the overthrow of the Mubarak regime. The country's struggling tourist trade suffered a further blow last month when the anti-Western character of mass protests in Cairo over a YouTube video led to a new round of cancellations from European and American clients.
