Afghan Women's Cricket Team Forms in Kabul as Women in Afghanistan Fight Islamist Influence

In a basement in Kabul a team of Afghan women are holding cricket training in a country where the odds are stacked against them. Under the Taliban women were suppressed in most walks of life and taking part in sports was almost unthinkable. Now, in a more liberal society, women are officially free to take up sports and with the recent emergence of a national men's cricket team the sport is slowly gaining popularity. The women's national team receives no official support and practice takes place on a rough patch of grass close to Kabul city. Team members report difficulties persuading their families to allow them to compete and many fear that rising Islamist influence in the country may once again remove the possibility to compete in sports.
